Understanding Trauma

Trauma isn't just about what happened — it's about the impact it left. Trauma can come from a single overwhelming event, a series of difficult experiences, or a childhood where your needs weren't consistently met. It can show up as flashbacks, nightmares, numbness, hypervigilance, or a persistent sense that you're not safe even when you are.

You don't have to have experienced something "dramatic" to be affected by trauma. If past experiences are still influencing how you feel, think, or behave today, that matters — and it deserves attention.

Signs That Trauma May Be Affecting You

  • Flashbacks or intrusive memories of past events
  • Nightmares or disturbed sleep
  • Hypervigilance — always feeling on alert or unsafe
  • Emotional numbing — feeling detached or disconnected
  • Avoidance of people, places, or situations that trigger memories
  • Difficulty trusting people or feeling safe in relationships
  • Unexplained physical symptoms — tension, pain, or fatigue
  • Feeling stuck or unable to move past something that happened

My Approach to Trauma Counselling

I work with trauma carefully and with your safety as the absolute priority. I won't push you to revisit anything before you're ready — ever. Trauma work always goes at your pace. Some clients find that just having a safe, consistent space is transformative. Others want to work more directly with what happened. Both are valid approaches, and we'll follow your lead.

I offer both in-person sessions in Anfield and online counselling via secure video. Find out what happens in your first session →

Common Questions About Trauma Counselling

Will I have to relive what happened?

No. Trauma-informed counselling never forces you to revisit experiences before you're ready. Safety comes first, always. We work at your pace and in ways that feel manageable to you.

Do I need a formal PTSD diagnosis?

No. Many people affected by trauma don't have a formal diagnosis, and that doesn't make their experience any less real or deserving of support. If past experiences are affecting your present, that's enough.

Do you offer online trauma counselling?

Yes. Online counselling is available throughout the UK. For some clients, being in their own safe space actually makes trauma work feel more accessible.

How long does trauma counselling take?

This varies widely. Some people make significant progress in a few months; others benefit from longer-term work. We'll review regularly and you're always in control of how long we continue.
